"THE QUESTION 'WHY?" ©2023 SOPHIA ASMAH

The most frequently asked question must be 'why?'

This is what came to my mind as I was watching a reality TV show and that thought inspired me to do this art piece.

I also remembered a friend of mine who always asks me the question 'why?' whenever we are having a conversation. I am never allowed to make a statement without adding a further explanation. I guess they required a requisite clarification during our conversation so that they wouldn’t have several questions/any questions on their mind afterwards.

When I noticed this trend, I realized that it was probably a good habit to imbibe. That is because I would also be able to get more answers and acquire a better understanding of statements made during conversations.

By asking the question ‘why?’ that would also reduce the amount of time one spends analysing and contemplating on prior statements made during discussions. The intent behind a person’s utterances are also clarified and any possible misunderstandings are quelled before they have the opportunity to fester.

This in turn leads to the ultimate goal of more peace in the world than strife.

Also if you have been around children for any length of time, you will know that they have surely mastered the art of asking the question 'why?'

There is almost always, what seems to be an endless stream of whys. Sometimes I have attributed it to their level of curiosity and I have had an endless amount of patience answering their queries.

But now that I think about it, I guess that by asking ‘why?’ and getting an answer, that frees up their little minds to be able to enjoy life with a lighter burden on their minds. Otherwise they would keep wondering about a lot of things whiles adults could provide them with the requisite answers since they have more experience and knowledge.

Whenever anything in life happens contrary to our expectations we inevitably ask the question, 'why?'

There are numerous occasions/instances in life when unexpected things occur.

The list of questions beginning with why are endless but these are a few examples; ‘Why is it so hot?’ ‘Why is it so cold?’ ‘Why is it still raining?’ ‘Why is there so much traffic?’ ‘Why are they late?’

While pondering on what to write I decided to look up the meaning of the word, why. Honestly, I don’t remember looking up the meaning of the word so this served as a refresher.

I guess that there are a lot of English words we use, albeit in the right context, but we have never looked up their meaning in the dictionary.

According to several dictionaries I looked through, the word why is used in various ways; adverb, conjunction, pronoun, noun and exclamation.

However, the context I am referring to in this article, is the use of the word as an adverb.

Therefore, the meaning is ‘used in questions to ask the reason for or purpose of something.’ (www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com)

As the saying goes ‘you learn something new everyday so I have added my newly acquired knowledge to my memory bank.

In conclusion, the more we ask the question, ‘why?’ the less misunderstandings there will be.

Maybe I'm not wrong in presuming that it is the most asked question, which would appear to be a good thing. However, it could probably also be asked a bit more often.
