The events which led to the naming of ‘The Tennessee Three’ a few weeks ago reminded me of my collection ‘No Gray Area’ ©2022 Sophia Asmah.
It was interesting that decisions were made on the basis of race in the year 2023 i.e. ‘are you black or white?’ And there was literally ‘no gray area’ in the decision-making process.
This is a summary of what transpired.
On 27th March 2023 there was a mass shooting in The Covenant School, Nashville, Tennessee. Unfortunately, three children and three adults were killed.
After the mass shooting three Democratic lawmakers; Justin Jones, Justin Pearson and Gloria Johnson protested for gun reform on the floor of the Tennessee House of Representatives.
The Speaker of the Republican 'super majority' House called for a vote for their expulsion since he accused them of breaking the House Rules.
On 7th April 2023, the votes were cast in the House and two of the lawmakers were expelled, whiles one lawmaker remained in the House. The two who were expelled were black and the one who wasn’t expelled was white.
My initial thoughts were that the outcome of the voting process was too obviously racially biased so that could surely not be the case. However, when Gloria Johnson was asked why she thought she was spared expulsion as opposed to her colleagues, she did not hesitate to say that it was because she is white.
I honestly could not believe that my initial inclination had been confirmed.
It was not therefore surprising that the events were covered extensively by the media and also on social media. Fortunately, in this case the two black lawmakers were re-instated temporarily.
Basically even though three people had broken the House rules, being black warranted expulsion and being white warranted non-expulsion. There was ‘no gray area’ in the outcome.
There are two reasons why I guess this reminded me of my collection ‘No Gray Area.’
1.Coincidentally the collection comprises of only 2 colours; black and white.
2.The inspiration for the collection involved decision making.
At the time, when I started the collection, I found myself in a situation whereby, I was having to resolve a lot of issues, simply due to the indecisiveness of the parties involved.
And this was turning out to be a semi - permanent situation. Anyway at the time, that is what I said to console myself, because I was praying it would not become a permanent state of affairs.
So, that was my inspiration for this collection.
It is either black or white when it comes to making decisions. There is 'NO GRAY AREA.'
If you have to make a decision, for example, 'should I go out or should I stay at home?' If you postpone making the decision, then at that particular point in time, your postponement is effectively a decision to stay at home.
Let me give another example. If a child asks their parents for a new toy and the parents say they will think about it. At that particular point in time, the answer is 'no' and maybe later on that decision might change.
Therefore, when it comes to making decisions there is 'NO GRAY AREA,' since inaction/procrastination also portrays a decision... black or white.
I have to admit that in the case of ‘The Tennessee Three’ the decision was literally black or white and no other decision was available in between.
Let me divert at this point to talk about a ‘lighter topic’ - the designs of two bags in the ‘No Gray Area’ collection.
This is 1/2 bags, I'm sharing now. I started with bags in this collection but I will share other designs when I complete them.

This is the first time I used the logo I made for 'SA DEZIGNS' in any of my designs and I like the final result. I put the logo on both sides of the bag.
SA DEZIGNS is my brand for all my designs – graphics, clothing, fashion, shoes etc.
This is 2/2 bags, I'm sharing now.
The icing on the cake is once again the 'SA DEZIGNS' logo on both sides of the bag.

The bags are available in the SA DEZIGNS online store contrado.com/store/sa-dezigns
There are other designs of the "NO GRAY AREA' collection also available in the store.
