CELEBRATING GHANA @65

Writer's picture: Sophia AsmahSophia Asmah

Happy 65th Independence Day to Ghana!

The independence of a sovereign nation has never seemed so priceless, especially at this time, when Ukraine is being invaded.

Therefore, to attain 65 years of independence is a great feat and should not be taken for granted.

Today, my hope and prayer is that, this independence will be guarded and the peace which currently exists, will be treasured.

On this occasion and as part of the festivities, I will like to share some of my creative work (poetry and digital art), which was inspired by Ghana.

I have a few poems which were inspired by Ghana but the one which I remember at this time, is my poem ‘My Colours’ was inspired specifically, by the flag of Ghana.

This poem is framed as a conversation between two flags; the Ghanaian flag and another. It is about the colours of the flag and what each colour represents.

The words of the poem transition into the motto of the coat of arms of Ghana; ‘Freedom and Justice.’ A link is thereby created between the Ghanaian flag and the Ghanaian coat of arms, in this poem.

My favourite stanza is the last one which is shown in the excerpt above;

‘All this while, JUSTICE

waltzes gracefully

around the edge.

A constant reminder, that

FREEDOM only exists…

Within the confines

Of the perimeter, thus created…

As JUSTICE floats around.’

This poem ‘MY COLOURS is in my book ‘SIMPLY POETIC’ which is available at Amazon.com

You can read a few pages of the EBOOK , at no cost when you click on the link above.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, I will also share some of my digital art, in celebration of Ghana’s independence.

This art work is ‘BEHIND THE FACADE – ACCRA (Sights & Sounds)’

Accra, which is the capital city of Ghana, should feature on your travel ‘to-do list.’

There are a lot of colourful sights and sounds of the city for you to explore, after you arrive at the Kotoka International Airport and head for the comfort of one of the welcoming and luxurious hotels.

The sandy beaches await you, as well as several historical sights including the Independence Square/Black Star Square, where the country’s independence was declared on 6th March, 1957.

Another digital artwork I would like to share with you is ‘BEHIND THE FACADE – DESTINATION GHANA, REGIONAL CAPITALS’

This art piece includes all the regional capitals of Ghana. These cities have varying tourist attractions which are worth visiting.

An example of one of the regional capitals is Cape Coast, which is the capital of the Central Region. Its tourist attractions includes the Cape Coast castle, where several slaves lived before their departure from the shores of Ghana, during the slave trade.

I deliberately mentioned Cape Coast at this time because it is the location for the country’s 65th independence celebrations which will be held on the 6th of March, 2022.

Please take a minute and look through this artwork, to find the regional capitals you are familiar with or the ones you might have heard of.

(There are other products with the designs shown above and there are also, more designs inspired by Ghana, in SA DEZIGNS online store:

I will end this by once again, wishing Ghana and all Ghanaians a Happy 65th Independence Day and many more years ahead of ‘Independence, Peace and Prosperity!’

It is definitely time to celebrate Ghana at 65!
